Fox News cut ties with former Rep. Trey Gowdy amid reports on him joining President Donald Trump’s legal team battling House Democrats in their impeachment inquiry.
“Trey Gowdy has been terminated and is no longer a contributor,” Fox News confirmed on Wednesday.
On Tuesday afternoon, it was reported that Trey Gowdy, who was hired as a Fox News contributor in January 2019, is in discussions with Team Trump to join the president’s impeachment defense team.
“We are in discussion with Trey about joining our team,” Trump attorney Jay Sekulow said on Tuesday, adding that no final decisions have been made.
Fox News reported during the “Outnumbered” program on Wednesday that Trump has hired Gowdy as outside counsel.
Gowdy served as a chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee and led the House Benghazi Committee, where he questioned former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other Obama officials.
This comes as the White House escalated its battle with House Dems on Tuesday evening, noting that the administration “cannot participate” in a “partisan and unconstitutional” impeachment inquiry.
