Senator Rand Paul dismissed the allegations today that the White House did a quid pro quo in dealings with Ukraine. He argued that the president, in this case Trump, has every right to withhold aid from a country where he believes there is corruption.
“I think we’ve gotten lost in this whole idea of quid pro quo,” Paul said on NBC’s “Meet The Press.”
“If you’re not allowed to give aid to people who are corrupt, there’s always contingencies on aid. Presidents since the beginning of time have resisted Congress and there’s been this sort of back and forth jockeying over what is sent. But also, presidents have withheld aid before for corruption. I think it’s a mistake to say, ‘Oh, he withheld aid until he got what he wanted.'”
“Well, if it’s corruption and he believes there to be corruption, he has every right to withhold aid,” Paul added.
Paul’s comments lit up Twitter.
“ It is a big mistake for anybody to argue there wasn’t a quid pro quo. Every Republican in Washington, including Rand Paul, is trying to do what Russia tells them so they can continue getting their aid. ” – one person tweeted.
“ And Chuck just let Rand Paul get away with saying it, apparently. This is precisely how the media has normalized Trump’s behavior. The coverup, smears, and intimidation… all to deflect from talking about the “bribery and extortion” speaks for itself. ” – another person tweeted.
Another person said, ” Rand Paul: best Senator in the nation. “
