Trump Says He Didn’t Order Barr To Probe Russia Investigation Origins

On Monday, Attorney General William Barr assigned a federal prosecutor to investigate the origins of the Russia probe and to determine whether the FBI’s surveillance of the Trump campaign was legal or not.

The Associated Press reported: “The inquiry will focus on whether the government’s methods to collect intelligence relating to the Trump campaign were lawful and appropriate. Durham has previously investigated law enforcement corruption, the destruction of CIA videotapes and the Boston FBI office’s relationship with mobsters.”

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump responded to the news, saying he had not ordered AG Barr to launch the investigation.

“It was the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the people of and you know what? I am so proud of our attorney general that he is looking into it,” he said as he left the White House for Louisiana.

His personal attorneys, Rudy Giuliani and Jay Sekulow, also praised Barr’s decision to assign a federal prosecutor.

Giuliani said he was not informed of Barr’s decision in advance, but called Durham an “excellent” choice.

“I believe Barr has selected an excellent person, someone who is a career prosecutor who has worked with Republicans and Democrats,” he told NBC. “As Barr has done throughout, he made a sensible choice.”

Sekulow said he found the selection “appropriate.”

“The origins of this investigation have to be examined thoroughly, and the appointment of a U.S. attorney would be the appropriate course of action,” he said.
