President Donald Trump offered rare praise for Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday, saying that she is a “smart woman” and knows what she’s doing with calls for his impeachment.
“I don’t think she’s scared of anything. I think she’s a smart woman and I think she knows exactly what she’s doing,” Trump told reporters when asked if he thought Pelosi was “scared” to impeach him.
Trump then touted the strength of the economy during his presidency, citing the stock market and low unemployment statistics.
“No, I think we’ve done a great job,” he said. “There are those that say the best job in the history of our country for the first 2 1/2 years. So, pretty much that’s the story.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has repeatedly shut down calls for impeachment from members of the Democratic Party, insisting that the House should remain focused on its investigations into the president.
From The Hill:
The Speaker on Thursday morning dismissed confusion surrounding the party’s oversight message as certain members offered conflicting descriptions of whether the House is in the midst of an impeachment inquiry.
She added that impeachment “is a very divisive measure” and that Democrats will only pursue it if the facts lead them there.
