President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Monday to announce that he will be giving golf superstar Tiger Woods the Presidential Medal of Freedom following his victory at the Masters yesterday.
“Spoke to [Tiger Woods] to congratulate him on the great victory he had in yesterday’s [The Masters], & to inform him that because of his incredible Success & Comeback in Sports (Golf) and, more importantly, LIFE, I will be presenting him with the PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM!” Trump wrote in a tweet this afternoon.
Woods shot a 2-under par 70 to win his first major title victory since the 2008 U.S. Open. His 13-under 275 was enough to defeat Dustin Johnson, Xander Schauffle, and Brooks Koepeka by one stroke.
The president is apparently in a great relationship with Woods, as he live-tweeted the end of Woods round in Augusta and was quick to congratulate the superstar multiple times.
He congratulated Tiger Woods on Twitter on Sunday, shortly after his win.
“Congratulations to @TigerWoods., a truly Great Champion!”
Woods and Trump have known each other for over two decades and occasionally play golf together. When pressed about his relationship with President Trump, Woods essentially punted the question and insisted you “must respect the office” regardless of the occupant.
